Without a crotch strap (anti-sub strap), in a head-on collision, your body can slide under the lap belt, leading to severe internal injuries as the belt rides up into your abdomen.
Best For:
Low-speed autocross or performance street driving (where permitted by law).
■ 5-Point Harnesses: Adding the Anti-Sub Strap
The 5-point harness adds a single “anti-sub” strap that runs between the driver’s legs and connects to the buckle.
How It Works:
Adding a single anti-sub strap keeps the lap belt low across the pelvis, preventing the “submarining” effect mentioned above.
The Concern:
For some drivers, a single center strap downside can be uncomfortable and may not provide the most stable load distribution across the lower body during an impact.
■ 6-Point Harnesses: The Professional Standard
In professional racing, the 6-point harness is the gold standard. It uses two crotch straps that wrap around the thighs.
Maximum Safety:
The 6-point design provides the best protection against submarining and ensures the driver stays perfectly centered in the seat, even during lateral (side) impacts.
Best For:
Wheel-to-wheel racing, high-speed track days, and professional competition.
